As a Downtown Los
Altos business owner or employee, you should know why the Los Altos
Village Association feels Measure D would be bad for parking, foot
traffic, and downtown's future.
The short
version:
- Would eliminate 200-400 parking spaces —
the opposite of what it claims to protect. Two of the ten plazas are
carved out for housing; once built, that parking is gone for good, with
no funding mechanism to replace it.
- Would cap the foot traffic growth
Downtown Los Altos has seen and continues to count on. The City's
potential plans for a new park, a parking structure, and other
improvements are professionally designed to bring more visitors and
customers downtown. Measure D freezes the plazas as-is, effectively
blocking those upgrades with potentially long and expensive public
vetting — meaning the increased foot traffic those projects would
generate for your business never materializes.
- Makes downtown a harder sell for new
businesses. A lawsuit-prone ballot measure signals legal uncertainty and
stalled growth — pushing new tenants and investors toward neighboring
downtowns at a time when Downtown Los Altos already leads the
way.
Beyond the direct
impact to businesses, Measure D also exposes the city to millions in legal
fees, risks the city's control over local zoning decisions, and — because
it can only be changed by another costly ballot vote — locks in these
problems with no realistic way to fix them.
Bottom line:
Measure D risks less parking, less foot traffic, and a tougher environment
for attracting new businesses downtown.
